OQUENDO CLASS DESTROYERS

Destroyer Oquendo
Destroyer Oquendo.

The Oquendo Class destroyers were the last ships of this type built in Spain. Although authorized in 1943, the keel of the first ship of the class was not laid down until 1951. The construction was delayed for many years due to technical problems. Oquendo trial results revealed stability problems and other defects, and therefore the construction work on the last two ships of the class was stopped. It was later decided modify them and this resulted in new and larger ships that were basically rebuilt and had little in common with the original project. Roger de Lauria and Marqués de la Ensenada were given heavier armament, modern equipment and sensors, however they retained the same and unreliable "Rateau-Bretagne" propulsion plant of the first Oquendo and this limited their actions and shortened their careers.
