Title: The Last Century of Sea Power, Volume 2: From Washington to Tokyo, 1922-1945 Author: H. P. Willmott Publisher: Indiana University Press. Publication date: 2010. ISBN: 0253353599 Format: Hardcover, 704 pages.
H. P. Willmott follows the fortunes of the established seafaring nations of Europe along with two upstarts, the United States and Japan. Emerging from World War I in command of the seas, Great Britain saw its supremacy weakened through neglect and in the face of more committed rivals. Britain's grand Coronation Review of 1937 marked the apotheosis of a sea power slipping into decline. Meanwhile, Britain's rivals and soon-to-be enemies were embarking on significant naval building programs that would soon change the nature of war at sea in ways that neither they nor their rivals anticipated.
By the end of a new world war, the United States had taken command of two oceans, having placed its industrial might behind technologies that further defined the arena of naval power above and below the waves, where stealth and the ability to strike at great distance would soon rewrite the rules of war and of peace.

Title: British Destroyers: From Earliest Days to the Second World War Author: Norman Friedman Publisher: Naval Institute Press. Publication date: 2009. ISBN: 1591140811 Format: Hardcover, 320 pages.
Noted historian Norman Friedman provides the first detailed study of the Royal Navy's destroyer from its predecessors from the 1880s to the 1930s, and its use in both World Wars. He shows how the Royal Navy developed the torpedo and its surface carrier, the destroyer, as both an offensive and defensive naval weapon. Friedman also discusses the influence the British exerted on foreign navies, including the American and Japanese fleets, destroyer design and tactics, and the British use of U.S.-supplied destroyers during World War II. The book is profusely illustrated with hundreds of photographs and drawings by A.D. Baker III and Alan Raven.

Title: French Battleships, 1922-1956 Authors: John Jordan, Robert Dumas Publisher: Naval Institute Press. Publication date: 2009. ISBN: 1591144167 Format: Hardcover, 224 pages.
The French battleships of the Dunkerque and Richelieu classes were the most radical and influential battleship designs of the interwar period, and were coveted by the British, German and Italian navies following the Armistice of June 1940. Using a wealth of primary-source material, some of which has only recently been made available, the authors provide a full account of their development and a detailed analysis of their design characteristics. The technical chapters are interspersed with operational histories, with a particular focus on the operations in which the ships engaged other heavy units. The book is extensively illustrated with hundreds of photographs and technical drawings, including twenty-two color profile and plan views of the ships.

Title: The German Invasion of Norway, April 1940 Author: Geirr H. Haarr. Publisher: Naval Institute Press. Publication date: 2009. ISBN: 1591143101 Format: Hardcover, 416 pages.
This major new history documents the German invasion of Norway, focusing on the events at sea. The first operation in which the air force, army, and navy worked closely together, Operation Weserübung included the first dive-bomber attack to sink a major warship and the first carrier task-force operations. Based on primary sources from British, German, and Norwegian archives, the book gives a balanced account of the reasons behind the invasion and showcases an unrivalled collection of photographs. As the definitive study of Germany's first and last major seaborne invasion, it offers a close look at an important but often neglected aspect of World War II.

Title: Battle of Surigao Strait Author: Anthony P. Tully. Publisher: Indiana University Press. Publication date: 2009. ISBN: 0253352428 Format: Hardcover, 352 pages.
Surigao Strait in the Philippine Islands was the scene of a major battleship duel during the Battle of Leyte Gulf. Because the battle was fought at night and had few survivors on the Japanese side, the events of that naval engagement have been passed down in garbled accounts. Anthony P. Tully pulls together all of the existing documentary material, including newly discovered accounts and a careful analysis of U.S. Navy action reports, to create a new and more detailed description of the action. In several respects, Tully's narrative differs radically from the received versions and represents an important historical corrective. Also included in the book are a number of previously unpublished photographs and charts that bring a fresh perspective to the battle.
