Royal Navy destroyer guns of WW2.

Post by Tank_Killer1 »

I've been trying to find out how much explosive were actually in HE shells used in 4"/45 (10.2 cm) QF Mark XVI, 4.7"/45 (12 cm) QF Mark XII and the 4.5"/45 (11.4 cm) QF Mk4.

I have been reading the handbook of ammunition 1945 and it states that S.A.P have around 4% of total weight but it doesnt mention the percentage for HE shells.

I looked at navweapons but they have no info for bursting charges for these weapons.

Here is the different shell weights.

4.5"/45, 24.95kg
4.7"/45, 22.68kg
4"/45, 15.88kg

are there any published works about this because I'm coming up short?

IIRC, the HE round contained about 8% by weight of explosive.
