Anti-Aircraft capabilities of the QF 4-inch Mk XIX naval gun

Post by Fatboy Coxy »

Hi all, our friend Wikipedia says the QF 4-inch Mk XIX naval gun was a British low-velocity 4-inch 40-calibre naval gun used to arm small warships such as Bathurst and Castle class corvettes and some River class frigates in World War II, mainly against submarines.

Its mount gave it a -10 to +60 degrees elevation, useful for anti-aircraft defence. However, the low velocity must have impacted on its AA performance. Does anyone know what its maximum ceiling was?

QF 4 inch Mk V naval gun - muzzle velocity was 716 metres per second (2,350 ft/s) giving a max ceiling of 8,800 metres (28,750 ft)

QF 4-inch Mk XIX naval gun - muzzle velocity was 396 metres per second (1,300 ft/s) giving what sort of ceiling?
