1871 "Preussen" Armored ship [1st Panzerschiffe]

Post by Paul L »

Looking through Groners German warships 1815-1945 some of the major earlier 'warships' were listed as 'armored corvette' and 'armored frigate' . From the Preussen class they mention 'Armored Ship' which translates into "Panzerschiffe". Were these ships planned as "raider ships" like the WW-II versions of Panzerschiffe?

I doubt it. More like coastal defence ships and tasked with securing the Baltic entrances?

Prussia had a miniscule naval force up to the 1870's. During the war with Denmark in 1864 Prussia was blockaded by the Danish Navy and the pre-Tirpitz German Navy developed initially as a response to their coastal vulnerability.
