CSS Hunley
CSS Hunley
Does anyone know if there are any surviving design plans or drawings etc of this submersible craft, I believe the first working submarine to sink a surface ship?

Re: CSS Hunley
I know I've seen some but don't remember where. Of course now they have the Hunley itself since it's been raised.

There are some here:

specifically:

as well as other links to info on her.
Looks like there are some here as well:

and here:

although most are probably duplicates.

Re: CSS Hunley
A shame that there is not CSS no more nowadays...

or not.

It would be interesting if the remains of the Confederate Navy's James River squadron were recovered....but it would be very expensive....
Re: CSS Hunley
The Hunley gets a lot of ink, largely I guess because submarine technology was new and exciting at the time, but basically its story is depressing with some brave men drowning or suffocating on the bottom without having achieved much. More uplifting is the overall history of the leapfrogging of naval technology as the Confederate States sought to overcome overwhelming U.S. navy superiority by innovative weapons. This goes for the famous clash at Hampton Roads, to the vicious river clashes, to the Bismarck of its day, the CSS Stonewall. The Stonewall never had time to influence the Civil War but it went on to change the history of the Empire of Japan but few people have even heard of it today.
Re: CSS Hunley
Not achieved much?? They sank a ship did they not - the reason for submarine technology being pursued?
