Re: Ideal Rheinubung
Saltheart, I somewhat think the capabilities of carriers as the main strike weapon against the northern group here is overassumed. We need here co-ordinated carrier attacks (difficult unless the carriers are in company) and then there is the problem of German flack. Using carriers would be essentia...

Re: Ideal Rheinubung
While reading the thread in which the Japanese forgot about their interests in the Far East and come to help Raeder to fight the allies I began to think that, in order to change the Atlantic Theater outcome none of that is really necessary. First thing to win is to shot Raeder and don´t let Lutjens...

Re: American battleship guns
Just a WAG on my part but did they think they (the Iowas') would be used more for bombardment of shore targets? I don't think so. After all the old battleships could do shore bombardment just as well as the new ones. I think they still believed the Japanese might somehow one day get battleships thr...

Re: American battleship guns
According to Friedman US batleships, BuOrd opted for a higher probability of hits at any likely battle range (up to 27km), in exchange for a lower number of truly devastating hits (through the deck armor). The reason is that a higher m-v gun has a flatter trajectory than a lower m-v gun, thus assur...

American battleship guns
When the Americans built the North Carolinas and South Dakotas they fitted 16 inch 45 calibre weapons. These fired heavy shells at low velocity to penetrate a lot of deck armor at very long range. This was in accordance with their doctrine of attacking their enemy at great range and destroying him b...

Re: Tirpitz and Graf Zeppelin 1941
I don't see a carrier, a battleship and a heavy cruiser as a fleet either. I see it as a raiding force with vastly greater capability of self-preservation than a loan battleship raider. A loan battleship gets picked up by a spotter aircraft or a cruiser and is simply shadowed until the force capable...

If the aircraft had never been invented...
Anyone think battleships would have remained the most important ship in a fleet, dominating the way aircraft carriers actually did in WW2. Or would hosts of destroyers maybe have ended up taking charge with longer range and more powerful torpedoes? I think battleships would have developed into ridic...

Re: Tirpitz and Graf Zeppelin 1941
GZ's sistership was never named, though some writers persist in claiming it was named Peter Strasser. If construction had not been interrupted, GZ would not have been operational until 1943, or perhaps the very end of 1942. A sortie into the open Atlantic in Nov 1941 could have been disastrous for ...

Re: late 1943 Tirpitz instead of Bismarck in May 1941
I second lwd here. Random distribution of hits rule when no direct aiming point in direct line fire can be achieved. I wouldn´t expect catastrophic damage that soon in a second run, either. Hits on turrets can have very negative consequences (this is true for all ships involved in the DS action), a...

Tirpitz and Graf Zeppelin 1941
In June 1940 Grand Admiral Raeder advised Hitler to cancel the two carriers under construction. No doubt Goering fanatically agreed and Hitler canned both ships. Gregor Strasser was scrapped and Graf Zeppelin mothballed. Lets have a scenario where Hitler has a bit of intuition. He knows he has two b...

Re: late 1943 Tirpitz instead of Bismarck in May 1941
Completely hypothetical scenario: What if the 1943 equiped Tirpitz would be sent back in time in may 1941 and woudl replace Bismarck. The main improvements would be: Fumo26 radars, much more AA, better trained and experienced crew, new target tracking systems, giving the ship 360* turning ability w...

Re: H class guns on Tirpitz
I wouldn't because to make a difference against 16 inch gunfire would require about 18 inches of face armor. Where as even just one inch more armor on the MAD could make a big difference against shells that have come through the weather deck.Tiornu wrote:I'd go with a turret armor upgrade.

Re: H class guns on Tirpitz
To be precise, we don't know that Holland's purpose was to protect his deck armor. But we need to understand that penetration of deck armor is not the same as penetration of belt armor. The RN's stated preference for shorter ranges derived in part from the idea that deck hits were more likely to pr...

Re: H class guns on Tirpitz
The US 2700pdr was a battleship killer, and it proved it 2 times. The Hood was a stronger opponant than Kirishima. The German 15" shell was a proven capital ship killer as well. ....and even if the shells did not necessarily ha(ve) bigger vertical perforation than the German 38cm, they deliver...
