Re: P-47 Thunderbolt: The USAAF's Best Pursuit Aircraft

I discovered that one great group of US air aces (5 kills or more) fought not in Europe but in the Pacific. Many of them got killed. What is the bearing on the subject of the P-47? Don't know which one great group that was, but US aces weren't any more immune to casualties that aces. They flew toug...

Re: P-47 Thunderbolt: The USAAF's Best Pursuit Aircraft

I like the P-47. It was expensive, but it was a wonderful hi altitudfighter - was anything better at that time up high? - with great firepower. I think the P-47N would have been an interesting matchup against late model FWs, had the mustang not been around to do the long distance job. My money would...

Re: FW190 v others

Perhaps it might be fairer to say that it was the shear weight of numbers of P51's that eventually overcame the German fighter defence? quite true, though by sometime in 1944 the pilot experience was prob better in allied units... That they had numbers and superior aircraft and more flight time/bet...

Re: FW190 v others

Cogito ergo sum well... If you postin Latin and call someone a troll ... That must be some kind of trump? ...but a p51d is still faster and longer-Ranged than a 190, can still outlive it, can still cruise faster than it. And I will bet that if you were to count up how many 190s were shot down by Mu...

Re: FW190 v others

I made my case pretty clear yesterday demostrating that FW 190 had a much better operational record than the US fighters. In order to do it I came forth with evidence on that regard. oh... I was talking about aircraft , not 'operational records' - if i was doing that, I'd say the that 190s had a po...

Re: FW190 v others

yellowtail, I do not understand this last post of yours, it is completely unnecesary and disputes nothing. You make an assertion without any support nor can refute anything I post: typical argumentative in nature breaking down some other guy's post and dissect it out of context. I do believe you ne...

Re: FW190 v others

Of course that's your expert opinion. Let's use something easily lost around here: perspective and context. perspective and context don't change the facts that I stated, which were... that the 190 was a very good aircraft, though weak at high altitude where it was needed and slower than p-47 and p-...

Re: FW190 v others

I think the 190 was a very, very good fighter, flexible and adaptable. It suffered at altitude, which is where it was needed when the bombing campaign got cranked up. The 190D was better, but very few and still somewhat inferior to the -47 and -51 at altitude... Rough parity, maybe, using a generous...

But it's not a big deal, we are just posting opinions on an internet forum. I'm sure if we were all sitting at a table with a few beers or maybe a fine bottle of Schloss Vollrad, .
I've never had but will be glad to try some!

Re: Pilot Aces of World War II

They hate Hitler... of course... but loved their cameraden and what they recall the best fighter of WWII, superior to the P 47 or the P 51: the Fw 190 long nose ... A very good afternoon that was reassuring. Don't be too reassured... The bit about the 190D is... Well, suspect, depending upon which ...

Djoser - Are you trying to demonstrate, obliquely, how to be one of those things yer prof wasn't? Or that you think I am? @yellowtail You are right, BS did not shoot down any Swordfish, however how many planes came back undamaged? I wonder how many attacks would possible after another day? R...

Re: Bismarck construction flaws

Yeah compare the ability of the Seydlitz or Derfflinger to absorb damage at Jutland. About 20 major calibre hits each, and the fact they made it home at all was considered impressive. And rightfully so... They were tough ships, those two... But i think that If they were hit with like number of 16/4...
