Re: Sunday, May 24th anniversay
Almost. It's a statement of Brinkmann: Ever since leaving Gotenhafen, the revolutions between the ships did not synchronize. Bismarck fully loaded, attained the correct speed as determined by position fixes. Prinz Eugen had to run a knot less under full battle-load-conditions. I interpret it this wa...

Yes, Duncan, I know. We discussed it several times before and you know I disagree.

Re: Sunday, May 24th anniversay
Well, is there any evidence that Bismarck was not able to make 30 knots at combat displacement?

Re: Bismarck Equipped with ME 109 Fighters ?
Generally the Arado was considered as an auxiliary fighter aicraft. It was thought that they will not be very effective to shoot down attacking enemy aircrafts, but they could at least interfere. The main problem to use any aircraft was the time for readiness. There was a so called “Sofortbereitscha...

LOL
Yes, it's a typo. "Rooms containing easily inflammable substances" sounds better.

Re: Bismarck's port rudder
18 leak pumps (Leckpumpen) each 15 m³/min at 12 m pumpingheight IIRC only 17 of 18 “Leckpumpen” were able to flood. One pump (boiler room 1) could only remove water. Each pump had a nominal capacity of 900 cbm per hour. Magazine flooding trials on Tirpitz confirm it (flow rate up to 961.8 cbm). Flo...

Re: Bismarck's port rudder
One should always read text with a critical eye. Yes, of course. I personally do not believe anything about Bismarck without reading the primary source. Yes, of course, there are always good books and bad books. However, in this context I can only speak about English books regarding Bismarck. Compa...

Re: Bismarck's port rudder
The confusion in translation can be a real problem, and is one reason why I always try to get German-speaking authors, etc. to write on German ships. Reading documents only in translation can be dangerous and misleading. :D Hello Bill, more and more it seems to me that there are a lot of errors in ...

Re: Bismarck's port rudder
One good example of this is the oft-seen description of the floor plates in the center engine room being displaced about a half-meter, with no reference to whether this represented a permanent or a temporary deflection. Well, I’m not sure, if there is a misunderstanding regarding the German word “f...

Re: Bismarck's port rudder
Well, that’s indeed astonishing. The rudder stock broke at its thickest part. After all, it’s a tube of 82 cm in diameter with a 30 cm bore! I would expect that the hull around the collar or the collar itself is at least deformed.

Hello Bill,Bill Jurens wrote: The rudder stock broke off just inside the outer surface of the collar where the rudder passed through the shell plating.
Is there any visible damage of the shell plating near the collar?

Re: Bismarck's port rudder
Hello Bill,
thank you for clarification. I've brooded over the pictures for several years now and it still keeps bothering me how it is possible for the starboard rudder to extends into the port side so much. Is there any simple explanation?
