Re: Italian fleet v British fleet
I was basing the senario on all five Italian Battleships being available (although three were apparently quite old) The old Italian battleships were thoroughly modernized and reconstructed during the 30's under the direction of Chief Construction Engineer Pugliese. They utilized the Italian de-capp...

Re: Italian fleet v British fleet
Gentlemen,
Thanks for your replies, I was basing the senario on all five Italian Battleships being available (although three were apparently quite old) and Nelson being fully fit without torpedo damage as I presumed that the two Italians against three RN's + a carrier would have been a one way fight.

Italian fleet v British fleet
Gentlemen, Just finished reading a new book 'The Battle of Matapan 1941' by Mark Simmons. In it he describes a situation that almost occurred when the Italians went to intercept a convoy which was escorted by three British battleships and a carrier (Nelson, Rodney, PoW ans Ark Royal). Apparently the...

Re: Naval Battles of Guadalcanal
I share your interest and would like to join you in paying homage to the sacrifices made in these battles. My interest goes all the way back to when I discovered Morison's accounts. In my opinion they were the decisive battles of the Pacific War. In my opinion they were more important than Midway o...

Jutland - a fight to the finish?
Gentlemen, At the risk of encroaching on another thread regarding the greatest naval battle in history it would seem that although Jutland had one of the greatest number of ships it was probably also the greatest non event as neither side really got to grips with one another, with that in mind, any ...

Hoods armour
Gentlemen, I'm sure this topic has been discussed before somewhere, but I could not find it, so appologies for reopening it. My question is this,Hood was apparently due to go in for a refit shortly before hostilities broke out and this was cancelled. I believe that the refit was to include the fiiti...

Re: Bismarck construction flaws
Gentlemen,
I believe that the hit on the Bow from PoW went straight through without exploding, any thoughts on what would have happened if it had?

Re: The Greatest Naval Battle in History
Can I ask a very basic question here. In what way was the Battle of Jutland historically significant beyond the scale of forces deployed? The outcome did not change the existing pre-battle situation. In my view the Battle of Corenel was more historically significant than Jutland - leading to the ''...

Re: The Greatest Naval Battle in History
Gentlemen, While Leyte and Midway were undoubtably very significant battles I think that Trafalgar was probably the most significant under sail and Jutland under steam. It maybe that I am biased, but although Jutland did not produce an outright winner (unlike Trafalgar) it was the German Fleet that ...

Re: Bismarck speed during last battle
I'm speaking to the idea presented by RF about extending the engagement against POW via long range gunnery rather trying to run it down. I don't see how or why the action woould become "long range", as the ships were at 13km distance, and probably had the same real speed at the time. Thus...

Re: Bismarck speed during last battle
Gentlemen, This discusson on Bismarcks speed is very interesting, it seems to me as a not very well informed observer that her capabilities were something betweem 28 and 30 knots under good conditions, which brings me back to a question that I have asked before. Aftet her battle with Hood and PoW sh...

Re: Did Raeder Order Lutjens to fight to the last Shell?
I would have thought it highly unlikely that Raeder would have sent such a signal on his own accord being what I would call 'the old school' of Naval officers, possibly Hitler may have done after the Graf Spee incident.

Re: Alternate Bismarck Campaign
la pallice was the event that directly led to the H41 79000 ton blueprint with 120 mm main armored deck. Difference between these bomb hits and steep falling AP shells(plunging fire). Even it is named plunging fire the angle of fall of AP shell is less than 45 degrees so obliquity was normally loca...
