U.S.S. New Jersey Inner Bottom

This is the inner bottom of U.S.S. New Jersey. The inner bottom is up and the hull is down. The closest opening is FR81 looking aft. It is extremely dry down there. This was a diesel fuel tank when the ship was in service. The emergency diesel generator is above. The round thing in the corner is a d...

Re: New Iowa Class Book

I think that you are referring to mine. The U.S.S. New Jersey channel has been showing off the review copies I printed out of the first volume. Due to my frustration over the near total lack of accurate information on the structure of the Iowa-class battleships, I plan to do a data dump in a series ...

Re: Bismarck range

One piece that is missing in this discussion is that the Iowa-class battleships were designed to carry fuel for themselves AND THEIR ESCORTS (and the earlier battleships adopted this). Fuel Capacity / Fuel Consumption = Range —gives a theoretical measurement, not an actual operational measurement. I...

Re: USS New Jersey Turret Foundation

I was cleaning the computer and came across an illustration I had made of the area shown in the photograph. Unfortunately, the board keeps giving me an unhelpful error when I try to upload.

C'est la guerre.

Iowas Class Battleship Plans

Through FOIA requests I have discovered that that original plans for BB-34–BB-66 were sent to the Naval Historical Warehouse in Memphis TN and were likely tossed into the garbage when that facility was closed. A full set of Iowa-class plans (300 boxes) was sent to the Philadelphia Navy yard. That se...

USS New Jersey Turret Foundation

This is from an extremely difficult area to reach beneath turret no. 1 on USS New Jersey. Turret fit was a major problem with the Iowa-class design. The redesigned turrets barely fit within the hull. Turret no. 1 had to be adjusted to fit. The bottom of that turret is truncated at either side. Unlik...

Re: Battleship Bismarck: A Design and Operational History

It's incredibly tough to get all the facts down correctly in a book. Even when you know the right fact, you often end up typing the wrong thing. Last week, a reviewer caught that I had put down 2 degrees as the loading angle of the Iowa class guns.Doh! That's the depression angle. Loading is 5 degre...

Re: Anatomy of the Ship Iowa/Stefan Draminski

Hans be careful now, as you will raise the ire of herr paseolati, as his opinion - although, by his own admission having actual had in his hands on only one of his books - is that anything Mr Draminksi publishes is dogdirt. :negative: My cats hate almost everything Draminski. The covers of the Iowa...

Re: Anatomy of the Ship Iowa/Stefan Draminski

A new stash of original Iowa-class plans was discovered this month that is on its way to destruction. Hopefully the forces of goodness will be able to be able to remove them before the incinerator.

Re: Anatomy of the Ship Iowa/Stefan Draminski

"My question: is there available (in English) any good technical book on Bismarck (I mean hull construction, armor (plates), engines detailed layout, turbines, boilers, guns, turret, fire direction, radar, fire fighting plant, pumps, boats, catapult, etc.) ? Is there on Iowas ?"" In t...

Re: The Structural role of Main Armour Decks

The U.S. Navy did not regard anything as "armor" unless it was at least 4 inches thick. While you are describing the deck armor as being 4.75" + 1.25" = 6", the designers considered this as 4.75" of armor. In almost every case, flat armor on the Iowas is attached to som...
