Battle Damage to Surface Ships During World War II

Post by marcelo_malara »

Hi guys. Anyone knows this book?

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00H2 ... OR9O&psc=1

Is it worth the price or there is nothing that can not be found in hyperwar site?

Really an excellent book, though -- as it was published c. 1964 -- now a bit dated. When it WAS published, it did reveal a lot of information hitherto unavailable in unclassified sources.

No need to pay huge prices for a copy. A bit of internet searching will reveal that it can be downloaded from several places, probably including the the U.S. DTIC and NTIC sites, for free.

Yup. That's it. Was originally translated by the U.S. government and published as ADA437233. The scan you sent is obviously from a hard-copy provided by the National Technical Information Service -- you can tell by the staple holes. Have one of these myself, purchased c. 1964. It cost, I think, $6.00 or so, but memory fails...

The photographs did not come out very well as at that time Xerox-type copiers were not very good at all with screened images, but -- although that was a problem way-back-when when these sorts of photos were rare, now almost all of them are pretty much run-of-the-mill items on the internet.

In order to get the photos in reasonably legible shape you have to find a copy of the Russian text in original form, so -- if you are like me -- that means in one version you can read the photos but not the text, and vice-versa. Copies of the original text can still be found on various used-book sites, but you may have to be patient, and be willing to pay through the nose for one.

Overall, it was considered an excellent general summary for the time, and was actually reviewed -- in it's translated form -- in the U.S. Naval Institute Proceedings as 'recommended reading'. Now, most of the illustrative content -- quite rare in 1964 -- has been completely declassified, and about all that's really useful are some of the summary tables, which still remain convenient for analytical work.

Usually in secondary sources it's merely referred to as some variant of "Korotkin'...

Nope, NHHC, as a volunteer. Me and my partners in crime digitized documents, uploaded them to Hyperwar, and let NHHC know they were available. Being a documentarian helped there.

That´s good! Congratulations!

Question, aside from ship plans found at https://maritime.org/doc/plans/index.php, do you know any other site that contains similar files or are you aware of any ongoing effort to digitize original ships plans?

I'm quasi-retired, too stubborn to lay down and die. I did The Battle Damage to USN Surface Ships, 4000 pixels wide on the drawing. They're in Hyperwar somewheres. s

Yes, I have them, lacking proper ship plans the damage plans are quiet useful.

It was the first time I did a triple scan with an A3 scanner. Learned much with that.
