Creating Flag Commands

Post by Fatboy Coxy »

Hi all

I’m pretty sure my terminology is wrong, so please correct me as appropriately but….

Did the Royal Navy create flag commands for specific operations?

And to illustrate my question, I’ll use Force Z, the Vice Admiral Tom Phillips flag command, with battleship Prince of Wales, battlecruiser Repulse, and four destroyers, Electra, Express, Tenedos and Vampire

So, let’s say they were able to add some more ships to this formation.

Simply because they were in theatre, and not to suggest they would be suitable, lets add the light cruisers Danae, Durban and Dragon, from the Indian Ocean and a couple of more destroyers, Scout and Thanet from Hong Kong.

The three cruisers could become a cruiser squadron, used for scouting, while the destroyers could be added to either the main force or the cruisers.

Does the cruiser force now warrant a flag, if not, does attaching the extra destroyers help argue this case?

Oh, and for those familiar with Force Z, who would be a suitable acting Rear Admiral for this formation?

Apologies OpanaPointer, but I missed the point of your post, was it to suggest that Rear Admiral Arthur Palliser, could have been suitable as flag officer for the cruiser squadron?
