Stern of Bismarck

Post by Carpathia »

Was is the status of the detached stern of the Bismarck? Is the stern upright, on its side or upside down?

It probably does not exist as an identifiable object. It appears that most of the shell plating aft of the main break essentially disintegrated either during detachment from the main hull proper, or on it's way to the bottom. A good deal of the deck plating in the stern area remains attached to the main portion of the hull.

I thought Ballard had found the stern upon discovering the wreck.

I don't believe so. You may be thinking of the wreck of Hood, where the stern is clear and identifiable. I know of no mapping of the Bismarck wreck site that locates the stern, although there have been various and sundry bits of stern plating found scattered around. I visited the wreck personally in 2001 and we didn't find anything. Nor has James Cameron on his explorations. A good deal of the stern is still attached to the main part of the wreck, though folded down so that it looks like a vertical bulkhead.
