There was also a Liberty ship called George Clymer, named after one of the signatories to the US Declaration of Independence..... which ended up in 1942 having top be sunk by the RN because it was too badly damaged to bring home......Bgile wrote:Yes, unfortunately most of our ships have people or place names. President Carter commanded at least one submarine in his naval career, and he does have one named after him:RF wrote:Be thankful that you won't be getting the USS Richard Nixon or the USS Spiro Agnew....... and even Karl might have something to say about the USS Jimmy Carter....

I agree whole heartedly with you here.chcrawfish wrote:With the current USS Enterprise scheduled to be decommissioned soon, I really wish that the Congress and Navy would name the first ship of the next carrier class ENTERPRISE,
On this however I think you are quite wrong.... I mean, come on! Ford? He was a mediocre Congresscritter and a useless President. ....
Re: Greatest Warship Name Ever
I also think Ford was underrated. He was ridiculed for a couple of physical gaffes, but he was actually an athelete in college. He seems to have been an effective president, just not exceptional.
Re: Greatest Warship Name Ever
Without wishing to go too far off thread I think Ford was unfortunate in being unelected to both vice-presidency and then president. He came very close to winning the 1976 election, but the fact of the battle with Reagan for the Republican nomination fatally undermined his presidential authority. He would in my view have been a better president than Carter.

I think you are probably right, RF.

At last, something we can agree on Bgile!

They should stick this on the bow of the USS Gerald Ford

James Earl Carter not only never commanded a sub, he resigned his commission while in nuclear engineering school before the NAUTILUS was even launched.Bgile wrote:President Carter commanded at least one submarine in his naval career, and he does have one named after him:RF wrote:Be thankful that you won't be getting the USS Richard Nixon or the USS Spiro Agnew....... and even Karl might have something to say about the USS Jimmy Carter....

Re: Greatest Warship Name Ever
Well thanks for the correction. At the time he was running for election I somehow got the idea he was an ex submarine commander (I'd recently left the navy) and then later I was really surprised when he chopped back the US submarine program. I guess it makes more sense to me now. I actually think it was "common knowledge" at the local reserve center and I wonder now if his campaign somehow put out that impression.chcrawfish wrote:James Earl Carter not only never commanded a sub, he resigned his commission while in nuclear engineering school before the NAUTILUS was even launched.Bgile wrote:President Carter commanded at least one submarine in his naval career, and he does have one named after him:RF wrote:Be thankful that you won't be getting the USS Richard Nixon or the USS Spiro Agnew....... and even Karl might have something to say about the USS Jimmy Carter....

Re: Greatest Warship Name Ever
Imagine that...a left winger who was less than completely honest about his military service. Now he's the SECOND worst President in our history.
When the submarine USS Jimmuh Cahtuh was undergoing trials, she was sent down to AUTEC in the Bahamas, where my Reserve helo squadron was in an exercise. The Cahtuh tried to sneak into the exercise to prove how quiet she was. The Reservists of HS-75 found her and hounded her until we got orders from Norfolk to back off from the sub were were messing with, and that THAT sub had never been there.
Carter...FAIL! as a ship name and as a President.

Carter IS the worst president ever the US had whilst Reagan was the greatest leader the US has had since George Washington and Teddy Roosevelt.
Regards,
Second to whom? Carter`s mistakes in foreign and defense policy make Bush look like a wise patriot. Whatever Bush did cannot be compared to the aims of Carter to render the US uncapable to defend itself (not to talk about Europe) to Soviet agression and conquer. Thanks to Carter my country lived for more than ten years (1978-1990) with the peril of being involved in a general conflict with marxist Nicaragua and I had to spent some time in an awful jungle expecting an invasion with many underarmed comrades. Central American people lived the terror of war thanks to leftist humanitarian do good idiots as Carter. Nicaragua and, even, what is happening in Middle East and Iran can be tracked down as his doing. Now he's the SECOND worst President in our history.

I tend to agree with the RN Admiral who complained -in the 1960's?- that the list of RN ships names was starting to read like a British road atlas... Still they are keeping up some traditional names in, for example, HMS Iron Duke and the new Daring class, plus hunter killer subs and the Carriers and Commando landing ships...
