The "war warning message" was sent to Hawaii via Western Union's 40 KW transmitter in California, the US Army's 20 KW couldn't punch through the solar flare "noise". Reading about a 100 KW transmitter lost enroute to the Far East made me wonder, what was the most powerful transmitter available anywhere at the time? Military or private?
Radio transmitters, a thought.

Hi Opanapointer, there were a few as big or bigger than the lost Singapore 100Kw. In 1924 the BBC opened a new 150Kw Long Wave transmitter near Birmingham, England, and they also had a number of 100kw ones elsewhere in the UK before WW2. However, in 1933, Radio Luxemburg opened a 200Kw long wave transmitter in the Grand Duchy. See http://frequencyfinder.org.uk/History_Transmission.pdf
Of course, whenever we talk of biggest, America usually comes to the fore, and in 1934, in Cincinnati, a 500Kw transmitter opened, which ran for five years, see https://www.neh.gov/humanities/2015/may ... d-only-sup
One thing of interest here is the article describes the size of the thing, simply massive!

Do we know what they were using in Japan for military transmissions? I know Station Hypo and Station Cast were listening but did the Stateside facilities have a chance to catch any of that?

I've been past the Big Ass Antenna Thing (BAAT) at San Diego, back in the '80s.
