Big Scary German Word

Post by Tiornu »

Is anyone familiar with the Bündnisfähigkeit concept? Is it basically the same as the risk theory?

Hi Tiornu,

In what context is the word used? Normally it means the quality or qualities necessary to be a worthy ally (as used by Chancellor von Bismarck). Hitler on the other hand used the term as the ability to conclude or force international agreements on the strength of military preparedness with the implied threat of using it.

They stood and Earth's foundations stay;
What God abandoned these defended;
And saved the sum of things for pay.

It is used in realtion to General von Stosch's fleet concept. He felt that Germany needed a useful fleet lest the country have no allure to possible allies in a maritime war. I get the impression he had a major influence on Tirpitz.

Ok. Buendnisfaehigkeit, in the context of Stosch and Bismarck was the ability of Germany to attract allies--in Stosch's case primarily maritime allies who would otherwise perforce have to side with major naval powers such as Britain and France--i.e., if you cannot be number 1 then attract enough allies who collectively can put your there by default.

Tirpitz took this theory and advanced it to the conclusion in his risk plan that to avoid aggression or conflict with the leading seapowers, be strong enough to make it too risky for them to contemplate military action against you. In the end he pretty much gutted the plan of his mentor and the naval race he initiated scared off the potential small naval powers Stosch's plan required for his German backed naval coalition.

Their shoulders held the sky suspended;
They stood and Earth's foundations stay;
What God abandoned these defended;
And saved the sum of things for pay.

Wow. It's even scarier without the umlauts.
Thanks.
