It is hard to believe that the technical infancy of aerial surveillance of the Royal Prussian Balloon Detachment produced such amazing pictures in 1880.

Great photos
Hi,
Interesting photos. I know that the Union forces in the American Civil War used observation balloons in some battles, but I'm not sure if they took photos. That was 20 years before these Prussian photos were taken, so I imagine the equipment must have been even more cumbersome. I wonder: did the Prussians use observation balloons in their war against France in 1870?

Balloons were were used in the Franco-Prussian war and even before, by Napoleon
