Historical LST 325

Post by Kyler »

Hello everyone, I am new to the board. I would like share with everyone that there’s another ship out there for people to visit in the United States. While she isn't nearly as exciting as the USS Alabama or USS Missouri my hometown of Evansville, Indiana is where Landing Ship Tank (LST) 325 is docked as floating museum. She is the last seaworthy LST in the world, purchased from the Greek Navy in 2000 and sailed across the Atlantic by a crew of retired World War 2 & Korean War veterans. Since she is seaworthy LST 325 does spend part of the summer traveling to other cities located on the Ohio & Mississippi Rivers.

LST 325 participated in campaigns in Italy, North Africa, and Normandy, before being sold to Greece in the 60's. My hometown built 67 LST's during World War 2, the most of any shipyard building the type during the war. LST 325 herself was constructed in the Philadelphia Naval yard in 1942.

Again since she is seaworthy LST 325 can participate in re-enactments, and recently with a national convention of military vehicles, amphibious vehicles took their turns driving in and out of the front cargo hatch in the Ohio River.

So if you military ship lover and you are driving through the Midwest, you may want to make your way through Evansville to see LST 325.
