Flash BLUE, control GREEN

Post by martikw »

I'm reading various action reports of the US Amphibious Group Seven preliminary to the landings on Okinawa, Apr 1, 1945. The chronologies frequently include notes at various times such as: 0036 Flash BLUE, control GREEN. Would someone explain their meaning and purpose? Are these being communicate to the other ships of the task groups/task units?

For example:

ComPhibGrp 7
Chronology of Operation
April 1, 1945 - Love-Day

0034 - Flash BLUE, control WHITE
0136 - Flash RED, control GREEN
0208 - Flash BLUE control GREEN
0229 - Flash BLUE control YELLOW

I found more info...

"Flash" is an immediate, urgent message.

In the memoir of a ship AA gunner at Okinawa, he states:

Flash RED means incoming enemy aircraft and is a call to general quarters
Control YELLOW indicates this is a warning and it's not close enough to shoot at
Control GREEN means start firing immediately

Flash WHITE means all clear and secure from general quarters

Still don't know what the others mean.
