Builder’s half-hulls are interesting models, generally large and plain. Years ago shipwrights used them to loft lines and they had no drawings on paper. These collectors items of original half-hulls are hard to find and expensive. I am trying to make these at the miniature 1:1250 scale, because I collect metal, wood, and paper waterline models at that scale. Presently, my collection fleet consists of about 1500 ships, and that is considered a small collection among the 1250/1200 enthusiasts. I am interested in building 1:1250 racing yachts, because they are not available commercially and at that scale, they represent a real challenge in miniature modeling. The half-hulls are made from basswood and walnut.

Here are the cruiser Prinz Eugen and the small cruiser Emden, and the yachts America and SMY Meteor IV as waterline models and half-hulls.

ooops! I need to separate my work from some of the models shown above:

Note: 1:1250 is 8 cm per 100 meters; 1:1200 is 1 inch to 100 ft.

1. Prinz Eugen: waterline model by Navis/Neptun - Germany, maker of a comprehensive set of German, British, USA, Russia, France, Austro-Hungarian, Italian and Japanese navies of WWI&II. See: http://www.collectableships.com and http://www.navis-neptun.de/

2. SMS Emden:
a. Large lead-cast model is a WWI fund-raising token inscribed: “Seemannshilfe (sailors aid) 1915-16) SMS Emden”
b. Rigged ship is a Navis/Neptun model special from http://www.SpiderNavy.com
c. 2 models, in grey and tropical white, are from Navis/Neptun

d. Model with dark deck is a scratch-built Emden by John Youngerman http://www.miniaturemodeling.com/

3. SMY Meteor IV: My work

4. Yacht America: My work
