Panzerschiff Scheer book?

Post by Gary »

I have read Joe Gilbeys book on Graf Spee (throughly enjoyed it) and I'm just wondering if anyone can recommend any good Books on the Scheer?

Thanks

Gary - Grüße!

Also look for a copy of Marine Arsenal, Band 12: "Panzerschiff/Schwerer Kreuzer Admiral Scheer" by Siegfried Breyer. I found a copy on eBay some years ago. German text, lots of photos.

We do need more documentation of this ship!

Panzerschiffe books

Post by Antonio Bonomi »

Ciao all,

hope those infos will help :

1) For the generic best book on Panzerschiffe of the Deutschland class ( Deutschland/Lutzow, Adm Scheer and Adm Graf Spee ) the best book is the Koop/Schmolke : '' Pocket Battleships of the Deutschland Class '' it is a Greenhill Book in English ( available also in German ).
Drawings, photo, camo and ship's evolution, plus their history.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/155750 ... e&n=283155

Than you have the AJ-Press Morskie books ( 3 of them from Poland ) dedicated to the Panzerschiffe ( with good drawings, photos).

2) The best book on Panzerschiffe Deutschland/Lutzow ( when she was renamed ) is this one only in German :

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/378220 ... e&n=283155

3) on Adm Scheer you have the list above.

4) On Adm Graf Spee there are many:

Very good is the one written by K. K. Rasenack ( the former crew member that confirmed Graf Spee camo never was green but made of grey tones ). The original book is in German , title is : ' Panzerschiffe Graf Spee' ( but it is available also in English or Spanish ).

Than J. Gilbey in English (title : Graf Spee and Capt Langsdorff Prince of Honor ) and than Dudley Pope '' Graf Spee life and death of a raider '' and Bennett '' Battle of the River plate''.

But among the best ones on Adm Graf Spee are according to me ( especially for the photos ) in Spanish ( edited in Uruguay by Librel Editores ) author is Diego Lascano title '' Historia Admiral Graf Spee '' there are 2 different books available one on the ship and one is dedicatd to the sailors.

Lately Enrique Rodolfo Dick made a very good overall book in Spanish ' Tras la estela del Graf Spee, edited by Edivern. A very good book too  .

Plenty of choiche on Graf Spee .....

Difficulties on the Panzerschiffe history ( later re-classified as Heavy Cruisers ) are the camouflages and the technical modification during the war, especially in Norway and on the last 3 years of the war in Germany.

Not many infos available about this period,.. you need a real expert to talk about that ..... some are available and visible on my models :

Joseph Gilbey recently published another interesting book: "Kriegsmarine: Admiral Raededer's Navy: Z - A broken Dream" 2005. The book is available directly from Mr. Gilbey. http://www.grafspee.com/order.htm

This one was published in English as ''The Battleship Scheer.'' It only covers the period that Krancke was captain of Scheer, not the lifespan of the ship as a whole.
