Fuze delay in aerial antiship bombs

Post by marcelo_malara »

Hi guys. I am looking for delay times. Contrary to artillery shells, which activated on impact and had a delay of about 10 milliseconds to the explosion, aerial bombs seemed to have a very long 8-15 seconds delay, don´t even know if the delay is post impact or post launching. Does anyone have info on this?

Regards

Bomb fuze delays were a bit longer than for naval artillery shells, which were typically 25-40 milliseconds for AP shells, but certainly not 8-15 seconds. There was a safety device which might take a few seconds to activate the bomb's actual fuze, and the typical delay for a SAP or AP bomb fuze might be 50 to 100 milliseconds.

german bombs many different types depending on type of target . throwing height, underwater detonation....

SC and SD types
delay 0,12 s
if the armor stops the bomb
nondelay at 800g(SC 800) - 6000g(SD 1700) deceleration depending on type of bomb

armor piercing
PD 1000 two settings
a) "non delay" = 0,045 s (from 6000 m against 180 mm deck)
b) delay = 0,075s (low throwing heigt)

PC 1000, PC 1400
delay 0,1 s

Minebombs
delay 0,12 s detonation within 10-15 m waterdepth

Thanks guys, That times make sense. I can no longer find the 8-15 sec delay info, I remember it being used in bombs involved in the skip bombing technique used in the Pacific.

Instructions for the use of bombs against ship targets
ZahlentafelBomben.jpg
(113.98 KiB) Not downloaded yet
penetration capabilities
dive attack =500 km/h, throwing height 1,2 km, impact angle 60° (90° = perpedicular to plate)
impact speed about 280 m/s for all
(RS =rocketdriven)
PC 500 RS 190 mm
PC 1000 RS 180 mm
PC 1800 RS 180 mm

PC 500...1800 (without rocket) dive attack as above impact speed around 180 - 190 m/s ; 80 - 100 mm

the RS types had significantly reduced charge.
