torpedo penetration

Post by Pandora »

hello all,
can torpedos that hit the hull of ship but dont explode penetrate the shell plate ? Lets say it hits the hull at 45 knots.
and if they can penetrate and the torpedo explodes, does it explode outside the hull before penetration is made or inside after penetration? What is the fuze delay?
thanks

The fuse delay is non-delay, exploding similarely rapidly as projectile non-delay, contact fuses. These torpedoes can´t penetrate into structure, even if they are plain duds. Typically they indent the shellplate but I have never heard about a torpedo dud beeing carried a distance by a warship.

thank you
so if no delay a torpedo working ok would explode right after contact with hull outside the ship. ok.
but wouldnt a torpedo dud that weights more than a ton and hits a thin shellplate at 45 knots be able to make at least hole?
just thinking.

..... Damage inflicted by a dud torpedo would at least depend upon all the typical things one would consider in any projectile attack - torpedo velocity, obliquity of strike, thickness of skin plating. Although I can't come up with a specific case of a torpedo holing the skin plating of a ship at the moment, a dud American torpedo is known to have put a hole in the rudder of SHIGURE during the Solomons campaign. A little research may well turn up some interesting data.

Warning - this was typed while listening to Screamin' Jay Hawkins on Jango, which is a very cool music site if I may be permitted to say.

There were several reported incidents where torpedos punctured holes in merchant ships but didn't explode. That would suggest it might be possible with a small warship (say a DE or corvette) but probably not anything cruiser sized or bigger.

It is absolutely possible for a dud torpedo to hole a ship where the skin plate is this enough, sa one inch or less thick. Such an impact destroys the war head. It is torn to shreds. But the plate buckles and is holed. Think about a deer hitting the sheet metal of your car. ~$ 3-4000 in damage and a deer does not have 430,000 J of kinetic energy.
