USS MAUI trench ashtray

THis is a very old ashtray and the coins are dated 1901 and has a match case in the center it has on the match case E.B. JONES U.S.S. MAUI U.S.N and a star in the center of the match case, I was told this was a form of trench art. Does anyone know if E.B. jones was crew member or Officer. and any other info on this would be greatly appreciated. Thank you all
