Foreign warships in the 20th century USN

Post by lwd »

How many were there? What were there names?
A current thread in the movies and games section got me wondering about this.
Subs may be listed but should be in a catagory of their own as they are "boats" and not "ships".
From the afore mentioned thread here are the first two.
USS Prince Eugen and USS Nagato.

The french battleships were assumed by the USN or were left in the expert hands of the "french navy"?

I'm sure they remained in the French navy. In fact, I believe one of them was used against the Vietnamese.

I am not sure whether the US took possession of a number of small German vessels in 1918/1919 plus also a number of German auxiliary ships in 1945.

..... Not USN strictly speaking, but the USCG training ship EAGLE is the ex German GORCH FOCK.

..... The Spanish cruiser REINA MERCEDES was sunk in the Spanish American War, but salvaged by the US, commissioned as USS REINA MERCEDES, and served as a receiving ship at Newport RI and Annapolis until 1957.

Was she scrapped or is she mothballed somewhere? She'd make an interesting museum ship if she's still afloat.

Don't forget the USS Macedonian, formerly the HMS Macedonian, the RN Frigate captured by the USS United States during the American War of 1812.

The ship was captured on Oct. 30th, 1812 later put in service of USN and served until decommissioned in 1828.

I know there were a few other RN captured and put into service, though their names are lost to me a this moment.
Most RN ships were burned or destroyed due the damaged the recieved from fighting with the big 44 gun frigates.

That isn't quite in the 20th century though is it? Sailing vessels changing hands was a very common scenario prior to the 20th century. Indeed there was a significant period of time I beleive when RN frigiate captains preferred to captain French built ships.

I believe she was scrapped (unfortunately).

She was sold to Boston Metals Co of Baltimore, Md., for scrapping.

IIRC, 10 Canadian built corvettes were commissioned into the USN, during WW2.

Without looking anymore deeply I would say most of these vessels were either German or Spanish. Some of the names I recognise, being KM submarines and surface supply ships.

SSS Horst Wessel became USCGC Eagle, a three masted sailing ship which is still used for midshipman training and goes on the occasional cruise.
