I have seen some accounts of the German naval Z Plan in which it was claimed that among the projected names for the H classe battleships was one of ''Der Fuhrer'' presumably in honour of and in deference to Hitler.

Quite what Hitler's superstitions and fears would have made of such a ship is interesting, particulary as the Allies could have had a policy of ''Sink the Fuhrer'' the very threat of which wouldn't comfortably sit with Geobbels' propaganda......

No doubt about it, it has to be Dreadnought: not merely for Admiral Jackie Fisher's oft-quoted remark that she should "dread nought", i.e. fear God only, but for giving a generic class name to every battleships built subsequently!

Yes "Iron Duke" sounds wonderful and is probably hard to beat.

Repulse and Revenge have certain strong qualities to them.

Yamato is a very catchy name as is Richelieu

Your mentioning of Richelieu is appropriate, as the statesman reference in the name approximates to Bismarck respectively of France and Germany......

P a R,

You would no doubt like the names of some of the ships of the Blue Funnel line, also so named.
