In terms of numbers maybe the Arab-Israeli combats or the Gulf war can present more tanks than Prokhorovka alone, but the unlimited violence seen in that particular battle (and it´s universal consequences) make it No. 1.
Anyway we must see the whole Kursk operation (not only Prokhorovka) and, numericaly, I believe it´s still the greatest concentration of tanks and armoured vehicles in just one operation.

July 16th:

1862 - American Civil War: David G. Farragut becomes the first United States Navy rear admiral.

This is quite sad:

1918 - Czar Nicholas and the Imperial Russian family are murdered under order of the government of Russia.

Declaring victory before winning the war:

1941 - Hitler convened top Nazi leaders at his headquarters in East Prussia to dictate how they would rule the newly occupied eastern territories. Ukraine, the "jewel" in the Nazi empire, would become a German colony.

Another very sad one:

1942 - Holocaust: Rafle du Vel'd'Hiv: The Vichy France government orders French police officers to round up 13,000-20,000 Jews and imprison them in the Winter Velodrome. In 1995, president Jacques Chirac officially recognizes the French police's responsibility.

A great moment but shadowed because many of the scientists were betraying democracy and giving the atomic secrets to Uncle Joe the Butcher:

1945 - Manhattan Project: The Atomic Age begins when the United States successfully detonates a plutonium-based test nuclear weapon at the Trinity site near Alamogordo, New Mexico.

A great defeat for the US thanks to Jimmy Carter. Because of his "pacifist" will and the overthrowing of Somoza my country and Central America lived in a state of war for almost ten years. Only Reagan was able to work it up:

Yep. I remember the night in 1979 when Somoza was forced to resign. As a matter of fact people believe that the Sandinistas won military over the Guardia Nacional but that wasn´t true. In the moment Somoza resign the Sandinistas controled only one town in Nicaragua and a strip of land in the border between Nicaragua and Costa Rica. Communist disinformation in Latin America and Jimmy Carter´s human rights policy were the responsibles for the overthrown of the regime... only to stablish a very dangerous tyranny that was nothing but a stronghold of communist forces in continental America.

Of course, common historical resouces give this next picture: "Oscar Arias, president of Costa Rica from 1986-1990 and Peace Nobel Price implemented a Peace Plan that was the answer to the Central American Conflict". Of course this wasn´t true because the Sandinistas would have never gave up their power if not by the following reasons:
1. First the USA had a naval battlegroup off the shores of Nicaragua ready to support the...
2. Land forces in Honduras expecting the order of an offensive against the commie vermin
But at the end it was:
3. Gorbachov surrendered his Empire and cut the flow of money, weapons and political and military support to Fidel and his Sandinistas Puppets. When all these happened the Sandinistas ran and embrace Arias´Peace Plan to saved their skins. And it worked: now they are again at office and bargaining with more vermin: Venezuela´s Chaves and Irani criminals...

you´re right man. The landing on the moon is probably the greatest adveture ever dared by the human race. And, thinking about it, was a military date because all this stuff about the moon was part of the Cold War. No ruskies threatening to "invade" the moon, no USA spaceship.

I remember the night (I was five years old) when Armstrong walk over the moon. I was just a kid and saw the whole thing with my dad before a black and white General Electric TV set.

Of course, we must admit that NASA greatest accomplishments were when they had nazi German scientists and engineers working for them. When those people grew old and died the "new" NASA was uncapable of designing something to replace the old Saturn V or that can do the work better than the Space Shuttle or flying coffin they have now.

Technologically speaking yes, but don't forget the discovery of America. Neil Armstrong and his crew knew beforehand where they were going, but in the times of Columbus they had no idea at all what they could find once they sailed "over the edge of the world".

At October 12 we will have that on the historical dates. Many people, nowaday, support the political correct stupidity that Columbus discovery was a damnation to America. Which of course is not so. He saved America from the natives that were in a process of gradually destroying themselves: the aztecs and incas were in civil wars; the mayas had disappeared and no one can guarantee that another european country would have behaved better than Spain. For instance: you can find thousands or hundred of thousands or millions of native Americans in Mexico, Central and South America. But you cannot find so many "native Americans" in the USA because... the US cavalry did their job better than the spaniards. So, Columbus discovery was a blessing, at the end and his nautic odissey one hell of a job...
