What is needed to sink a US Navy task force?
1 carrier, 1 cruiser, 2 destroyers, 7 frigates, 2 nuclear submarines, auxiliary ships and the air arm.
surface power, air defense, antisubmarine... An invincible task force!!
Sink it... impossible mission? Who and how could be done?

This size of force is not very big - only one carrier for example.
IT could be defeated by a small force of very fast underwater craft. Sink the carrier and the two nuclear subs, the rest must withdraw.

Over confidence helps a lot to destroy the un destructible assets, just that.
Maybe a Russian submarine everybody underestimate, or a Kirov full of shipwreck missiles or just some planes.

How are you exactly gonna sink the carrier and the two subs?RF wrote:This size of force is not very big - only one carrier for example.

... and how do you think you can pass through the scorts in the first place?

A Kirov would be seen in US Radar before it can get close to lauch anything and the F-18 fighters would launch air strikes.Karl Heidenreich wrote:Over confidence helps a lot to destroy the un destructible assets, just that.

The Russian submarine would be tracked too and deal accordinly. You need much more than that to even have a chance to destroy the American task force.

Let´s try again: Overconfidence helps a lot to destroy "undestructible" assets or do the what´s not possible:
Germany wasn´t capable of invading Poland and got away with it... nor to land in Norway...
Nor Germany wasn´t capable of conquering France while laughing loud of the Maginot Line!
What about Pearl Harbor, which couldn´t be attacked, and less if done by the North?
Nor Tokyo could been bombed via carrier launched B-25...
And Nimitz with 1/5th of the forces assembled against him couldn´t win at Midway kicking some Kido Butai´s butts!
Nor the Germans could launch a surprise offensive at The Bulge in the middle of december 1945...
And Inchon was completely safe of seaborne forces during low tides.
Nor the Tet Offensive launched...
Nor some islamic students could hijack four airliners and destroy the WTC and hit the Pentagon...
The best moment to strike is when your enemy is thinking he is safe. Nothing is impossible in warfare, nothing when you have the Will to succeed! Technology is an instrument, not a guarantee.

Of course as you say nothing is impossible and that is why I ask how would you attempt to attack the task force.
You can't expect to defeat those ships with a small motor launch no matter how much will power you have.
I'm just trying to put a realistic scenario.

Well, some idiots in an small motor boat did blew quite a hole in the hull of the USS Cole. Quite unexpected, huh?

On the other hand add a thermonuclear device to said motor launch and ...minoru genda wrote:...

As I said a rock works pretty well also as long as it's big enough and moving fast enough.

So all you guys can put up against the US force is a Kirov Class, a submarine, and a rock?

Re: What is needed to sink a US Navy task force?
The weapon I was thinking of (if I can be permitted to mention this please, Jose, before you shunt this thread into the Off Topic section) was a craft like the USO shown in the Gerry Anderson series UFO in the episode ''Sub Smash'' where an alien midget submarine with an underwater speed of 60 knots uses a laser ray to sink ships and submarines.minoru genda wrote:How are you exactly gonna sink the carrier and the two subs?RF wrote:This size of force is not very big - only one carrier for example.

Re: What is needed to sink a US Navy task force?
Any surprise attack would be almost impossible to defend adequately. For example, you send aircraft to "recon" the force and then attack with missiles at close range. You send a surface ship to "shadow" at close range and fire weapons at the CVN from point blank range.
I also think there would be a good chance to torpedo the CVN from a small modern submarine. They are very hard to detect.
