Can anyonoe ID these ships?

Post by DesertRick »

Sorry about the quality, but these pics were shot by an Android from an 8mm home movie projected onto a piece of paper taped to a wall. My grandfather took these. I'm guessing they're from around '38 or '39, definitely pre-war. The movie is titled "La Jolla", so I'm guessing they stopped in San Diego at some point. I'm having the films digitized now. Any help would be appreciated.

First one is a USN battleship, probably one of those rebuilt after Pearl Harbor, possibly USS New Mexico. The second is USS Lexington or Saratoga, battlecruisers converted to aircraft carriers via the Washington Naval Limitations Treaty.

Thanks for the start...the carrier looks to be the Saratoga.

Yes, the vertical black strip was painted in Saratoga.
