How would you fix the Alaska class?

Hello everyone.

I love the Alaska class. They're good looking ships, and for what they were made to do, they probably would have done well. But I believe the too many cooks in the kitchen line that's often associated with her rings true. She's weighty, huge, doesn't host an overly impressive AA battery in general, let alone for her size, mid ship catapult, poor maneuverability,

So how would you go about fixing this ship?

I think the entire concept is flawed. Too many eggs in a very fragile basket.

Twin 16" turrets instead of the triple 12" turrets. Then stack on the AAA for carrier escort duties.

I'm not certain that the ship could accommodate three twin 16in turrets in exchange for three triple 12in turrets without incurring significant weight penalty.

A very rough rule of thumb is that the weight of a gun will vary approximately as the cube of the caliber.
My back of the napkin SWAG suggests that 6 x 16in guns would weigh about 50 pct more than 9 x 12in

..... and the same would apply to the ammunition outfit for 6 x 16in versus 9 x 12in (assuming similar number of rounds per gun).

You might get away with 6 x 14in, though.

Sounds like a plan. Jack her up and I'll go for parts.

Don't build them. Put the time and effort into completing USS Kentucky
