HMS Tameraire

Post by tameraire01 »

What if the admiralty instead of stopping and starting building the two lions they continued building just Tameraire. With the loss of HMS Hood in the Denmark straight and the possibility of Tirpitz sortieing, The Admiralty speed up the construction of Tameraire as her hull is near complete along with the the guns near completion. Do we see say Tameraire versus Sharnhorst at north cape.

What possible layout do we see her in.

45 000 tonne displacement
speed 32 knots
9X16 inch guns
8x 5.25 inch guns
18x 40 mm bofors AAA
Armour as is original 1938 plan.
Ideas are more powerful than guns. We would not let our enemies have guns, why should we let them have ideas. Joseph Stalin

Well, it is conceivable, I guess... If production was given enough priority, then HMS Tameraire could have been comissioned in mid-1943, or even earlier, and sent to cover convoy JW-55B...

As it was, especialy after Pearl Harbor and the loss of HMS Prince of Wales and HMS Repulse, all major navies put their heavy battleship programs on hold. Thus, Lion, Montana, H-39, were stopped and then cancelled.

Only the original design (1938) could have been ready in time, and that design was for 40,000 tons (standard), 30 knots, 9 x 16in guns, 16 x 5.25in, 48 x 40mm pom-pom.

What role would we use her for? Fast escort or fire support?

If she was given priority over vanguard then she would be built a lot freaking sooner?
