Sovietsky Soyuz class battleships
Here's a question i've been pondering, what if the Soviet super battleships were able to be fully constructed, launched and commisioned or at least one or two of them? Sovietsky Soyuz and Sovietskaya Ukraina were in very advanced stages of construction during operation Operation Barbarossa, sadly as a result of the earlier stages of the eastern front Soyuz and Ukraina were captured by the Germans then later reclaimed by the Soviets... But the resources dedicated in constructing these battleships were abandoned and sent to ground unit productions...
So my question is how would they have affected the war if the Soyuz, Ukraina and perhaps even Rossiya were completed and comissioned early? Would they be sent to hunt down the German surface fleet; more importantly hunting down the Tirpitz?

Re: Sovietsky Soyuz class battleships
They would not have had any opportunity to act as battleships but would have been extensively employed as ground-bombardment platforms.
Re: Sovietsky Soyuz class battleships
I agree, most likely part of the Baltic or Black Sea fleet, they wouldn't have seen much naval action.

Just the baltic sea, unless they plan to ship a 59,000 ton battleship over land so either the Soyuz and Ukraina can serve in the baltic sea.JtD wrote:I agree, most likely part of the Baltic or Black Sea fleet, they wouldn't have seen much naval action.
Re: Sovietsky Soyuz class battleships
You can still do a trip around Western Europe for the Black Sea, a trip around the North Cape for Murmansk or a trip around half the world to the Pacific fleet. It's just not likely to happen, in particular the two latter options.
But it all depends on how "early" the ships had been finished.

Why would one of them be sent to the Black Sea though? Considering there are much greater threats in Baltic? Particularly the twins, the Tirpitz and as well bombardment missions in the Poland and Germany?

Didn't Turkey by treaty prohibit BBs from passing the straits? Or was that post WWII?JtD wrote:You can still do a trip around Western Europe for the Black Sea, ....
Re: Sovietsky Soyuz class battleships
It is impossible.
The most probable (real) date of of completion 1944-45.
Even having accelerated construction earlier 1943 ships will not be completed

Then there's the problem of where to get the guns...

Both in drawings and in pre-production models.
I think by 1944 a batch production would be adjusted.

Since by the time Germany was attacking Russia the Ukraina was already constructed up to her main deck, all they needed to really finish was her guns, superstrcture and damage control. I dont know about the Soyuz though but it might have been in some advanced stage of completion as well by 1941.
Re: Sovietsky Soyuz class battleships
For June, 23rd, 1941 readiness of the Soyuz - 21,14 %, Ukraine - 17,5 % (on the hull - 65 %)BlackBirdZGTR wrote: For them to be comissioned?

I'm pretty sure I read that the Soviets were trying to buy the guns from another power indicating that they may not have had the capability of creating her main guns.

The US perhaps? The Sovietsky's would of been formidable ships had they been equipped with the mark 7 guns.I'm pretty sure I read that the Soviets were trying to buy the guns from another power indicating that they may not have had the capability of creating her main guns.
