-usefullness
-where they ever deployed in a moving ship or tried so?

Anti-torpedo nets were also used in a non-naval sphere, such as protecting inland targets in contact with waterways.
One such area was in protecting dams from being torpedoed, and this is one of the reasons Barnes Wallis developed the famous ''bouncing bomb'' to penetrate the walls of the Mohne and Eider dams
