Effect of bombs on Tirpitz

Post by paul.mercer »

Gentlemen,
As you all know Tirpitz was finally capsised by 6 ton bombs from RAF Lancasters, was there ever any evaluation of what the effect of these bombs had on her armour (I Know she was sunk!) I would imagine that some would have gone straight through her and did'nt actually need to explode to cause mortal damage.

This is a pretty comprehensive report, and it demonstrates the strategic consequences of having a force of heavy bombers, an arm the Luftwaffe never properly developed.

It also demonstrates the danger of having large outboard voids and not ballasting partly full fuel tanks.

Even if the Tallboy's didn't detonate, they would still cause a huge amount of damage by going right through her. I think this happened to the Scharnhorst and Gneisenau in Brest didn't it?

And if the Tallboys failed, there was always Grand Slam. As evidenced by their demolition of the Beiliefeld railway viaduct - without actually hitting it.
