WWI Armor Quality

Post by WDMartin »

Greetings All,
What is known about the quality of armor in WWI? I have heard some say that the Germans had the better armor, or the English. Is it even possible to truly know? It would seem that unless quality control is extremely tight, there will be some variation between batches from the same plant, even more variation if from a different manufacturer. How would you rate the Armor of the major navies of this time period?
Thanks, Bill

rather than launch into some long explanations, I would instead direct you to

http://www.combinedfleet.com/metalprp2002.htm

which has a very good overview of various armours from iron and wrought iron plating of the 1850s and 1860s through to the armours used in WK2. It is a helpful guide and starting point, and in my opinion, well written and fairly easily understood.

They stood and Earth's foundations stay;
What God abandoned these defended;
And saved the sum of things for pay.
