Odd Picture Request

Post by Kyler »

I am looking for pictures of sailors or officers smoking pipes. Especially pictures of Pre-Dreadnought (1890's) era to World War II.
This period is because most pipes by than were either Briar or Meerschaum. They don't even have to be smoking, just
have a pipe in their hand.

I am an avid pipe smoker and just recently took up pipe carving. I am trying to find some pictures of the styles
and finishes of pipes that were common during this period for inspiration.

Have you tried any local museums? Even if they don't have anything on display if you ask a curator you might get to see or even handle some interesting examples.

For some reason mystic seaport poped into my head so I put it in google along with pipe and here are some of the references I found:

The other living history type places such as Colonial Williamsburg are likely good place to look for pictures or info as well. I think I've even seen a book on it but it's been a long time.

There's a photo of Admiral Frank Jack Fletcher - one of America's great admirals, the underrated & much-dissed Frank Jack, who won every carrier battle he fought - lighting his pipe

Here ya go -
