Large free enterprise economies live on trade, and protectionism and war is their enemy. This is why Germany and Japan have enjoyed such rapid economic growth since 1945, they are much better off pursuing that path than one of supra-nationalism and conquest.
Britain did lose a lot in WW2. bUt even without an empire Britain today has the world's fifth largest economy, the second largest in Europe and is able to largely bankroll the European Union.
