Queen Elizabeth II retiring and... going Dubai?

Post by Karl Heidenreich »

I´m amazed how England, a country known for her maritime tradition has made possible for it´s generations to come not to know a single of their most famous ships (aside from Victory or Cutty Sark). Not a single british dreadnought exists, Queen Mary is at USA and now Queen Elizabeth II on her way to Dubai. Sad.

Best regards

I agree. I amazes me. When one of our famous ships is going to the breakers there is always a public outrage of some sort and often money is raised one way or another. I suppose one thing that helps is naming our ships after cities or states. But to think that the British didn't save even ONE of their battleships just amazes me.

Of course it still makes me sad about the misguided use of USS Oregon. She was actually a museum ship and they sent her off to the Pacific to be an ammo barge, for God's sake!

Bgile:

But at last the US has saved a lot of valuable ships. I have been at the Intrepid (and the destroyer and the sub, Growler, alongside it) in New York and expect next year to go to Camden and visit USS New Jersey (Yeah, an Iowa, so what?). And you have Missouri at Pearl, and the Texas, Alabama, Massachussetts, and a lot others (I believe you still have Fletchers somewhere). And add to that is a US company the one preserving Queen Mary. So, I believe that given the situation you´re doing all right.

But Warspite, KGV, Rodney, Vanguard, they are all lost with Britannic and many historic ships. Very sad. Now Queen Elizabeth is going to Dubai, to be an hotel for some people that are unlikely to give any value to the historic meaning of the ship (for God´s sake, the RN use it to transport troops to the Falklands/Malvinas war!). Well, the things I would do with Bill Gate´s money...

:( She is currently docked in Philadelphia while somebody decides what to do with her... All they need is a fraction of Gate's money for the restoration and they have a home and insane source of income   :quiet: He he he...

This is what happens in a country dominated by political correctness and an obssession with being part of ''Europe'', we lose our sense of identity and history.

That is until the British voter has the sense to elect a UKIP government, however I won't hold my breath as it looks like Blue Labour will get in at the next general election - yes, the same lot that were so spectaculary kicked out of office back in 1997.
