His crossing of the English Channel didn't get much publicity in the UK that I have seen, and to be quite honest I don't really see what the fuss (or hype?) is really justified.
Some 20 years ago there were several demonstrations of people with jet packs strapped on their backs able to do VTOL and move short distances. This sort of thing isn't new and it is surprising that it hasn't been developed futher before now.

You can strap a hundred pound machine on a man and he can fly for a short distance. Noone has shown that to be especially useful. The US Army worked on it for a while and decided it wasn't worth it. Maybe it will be some day when it gets smaller and lighter. The way it is now, the army's "future soldier" system is still too heavy, let alone trying to make it fly.
