Identify indicator

Post by bracer »

Hey!
I have another tool in the command bridge of the Scharnhorst class that I am trying to figure out the purpose of.
Maybe some one in here knows what it indicates?
It seems to be nine lights indicating something. But I cannot interpret "Ausk. Schiffswellen".

It's number 10 in the plan:

Thanks in advance!
All the best!

What you have circled in red is to the right of switches 11, 12, and 13. It isn't shown in your diagram and is not the thing you asked the meaning of.

Item 10 is to the left of the three switches 11, 12, and 13 and is not in your photo, so "Ausk. Schiffswellen" is not relevant to your question.

May be the photo is reversed?

Always possible, but the three large round instruments on the right next to the sailor don't seem to appear on the left of the drawing.

They probably had different layouts on the different sisters, or it changed over time.
As you see here in what is probably Gneisenau the lightbox is probably in the correct position according to the plan since it's not present to the right of the three emergency engine order switches:

So I am very convinced that the lightbox with nine lamps is the one I've marked in red and is number 10 on the plan.
Even if it's not, according to the plan it would look something like the one marked with red.
Ausk Schiffswellen is relevant bescause I am interested in knowing what number 10 means, which would be a lightbox with 9 lights.

Cheers!

.
Google translator would call that "ship waves", quiet misleading. May be some of the German speaking people here can shed light on the lights :D .

"Schiffswellen" are the ship's shafts, port, center and starboard.
There are however 9 "lights" in that panel.

Can be the rpm of the HP, MP and LP turbines? Anyway that would be dials, not lights.

Thank you! That makes more sense. I've had a hard time translating Schiffswellen...
Number 14 says: Empfänger - Schiffswellen U.Z. Anlage. I imagine that is the shafts rpm indicator.
11, 12, 13 are "Not Masch Telegr BB/MS/St.B" which I interpret as emergency engine orders for each engine.
They indicate V, S, Z. So I guess you could order V (forward), S (stop) or Z (backwards) incase the main engine order telegraph would stop working.

Marcelo might be onto something regarding the turbines.
Can it be the lights indicate which turbine is connected to each shaft? Like high pressure, cruise (if they had cruising turbines) or reverse?

Thank you all for helping me!

It's the coupling indicator of the thrust blocks of the three shafts. I assume the lamps indicate "coupled", "coupling" and "decoupled".

Thank you, Herr Nilsson!
I think I understand thrust block, but in which case would they be decoupled?

The shafts would have been decoupled from their turbines in case of only one or two turbines and propellers were used. The other propeller(s) was/were decoupled to avoid damage to the stopped turbine(s).
Defect turbines or damaged shafts/propellers would have been decoupled from each other as well.

I understand, that's quite an important indicator then. Thank you very much!!

Next I am working on the Gefechtsbildempfänger, 35 in the plan.
I am also looking at 36.

The plan shows it like this:
Image

And I made a guess that it would be the same as this one from Bismarck:
Image

The plans description:

My interpretation:
Image

I have just made guesses that it would show target range, speed and bearing for the three fire control computers.
But it's purely guesses based on what I can make out from the dials in the photo.

Does anyone have any insight on this device or device 36? What did they indicate?

Thank you all for the input!

Hi Marc, Do you have any info how the coupling/decoupling was done?
