Regarding general orders for atlantic operations

Post by bracer »

Hi everyone!

Can anyone explain this order, and why it was mandatory:
Accordingly, when Bismarck and Prinz Eugen attack a convoy, they must do so from opposite sides.

I read it here: http://www.kbismarck.com/general-orders.html

All the best,
Daniel

Probably with the goal of "boxing in" the convoy, not allowing ships to escape on either side.

It was also probably an attempt to draw off the convoy's escort towards Bismarck, while Prinz Eugen would attack form the other side, thereby firing against the merchants without immediate retaliation from the escort ships.

And, I think, that if the convoy scattered more targets would be accessible by German guns if they were separated.
