Bismarck's "Anton" / front turret.

Post by behblc »

The lack of "ears" on the forward turret , when did the "ears" disappear and why ?
Would anyone have a photo of the "ear less front turret ?

Prinz Eugen also lacked a range finding unit on her forward turret.

thanks

Prinz Eugen never carried them on A and D turrets. They were only present on B and C. The rangefinder and its associated armoured housing (ears as you call them) for Anton were removed during her December 1940 and January 1941fitting at Blohm und Voss shipyard. It was found that the rangefinder for Anton was too severely affected by water breaking over the bow in rough weather and by spray, to be useful, so the rangefinder was removed and the holes left by the removal of the hoods were plated over.

There are several pictures here: http://www.kbismarck.com/operheini.html

Their shoulders held the sky suspended;
They stood and Earth's foundations stay;
What God abandoned these defended;
And saved the sum of things for pay.

Hi,

Anton never received a range finder - thus it was never removed. Also note the the 15cm-battery still waited for their rangefinders to be fitted in March 41 (see fotos from March 41).

Happy modeling,

Bernd.
Bye,

Bernd.

Gentle men thank you for your information and views on the ranging gear / lack of range finding apparatus on the PE and Bismarck.
