Apparently they had the worst pilot ever.

This was quoted at another forum and credited to the January 6th edition of the Socorro Defensor Chieftain.

"In early 1941, another interesting target was constructed south east of Socorro. It was a scale model of the German battleship Bismark, and was made of dirt with wooden logs for the gun turrets. This was built to train pilots from the Royal Air Force in identifing the famous battleship at night. However, the Bismark was sunk in May 1941--- before the "adobe" Bismark saw much use. It is still there today."

I believe that is the LLS-1 or Land Locked Ship 1 or USS Desert Ship. Not much info on it, and only a few pictures. Pretty neat though.

Hmmm, very interesting. Well and truly beached.

However as it is a scale model at least we can't blame Admiral Lutjens or Captain Lindemann for bad seamanship and lousy navigation....
