Re: Tirpitz and Gneisenau main armor belt thickness etc.
As built, the dimensions of Bismarck and Tirpitz were almost identical, with the latter being a whopping 20 tons heavier and 17cm longer at the waterline. Now, Tirpitz shaved off quite some amount of armor; 5mm main belt, 30mm deck armor over the machinery (while adding 5mm over the magazines), and...

Re: Identify indicator
It depends. It's possible to stop the shaft by the turbine and then clamp it by a brake. This brake would work up to about 15 knots. The coupling on Scharnhorst and Bismarck could be coupled while shaft and turbine were running. There was an synchronized revolutions indicator to determine the right ...

Re: Identify indicator
Well, there were two different designs of the shaft decoupling. A simple one with removing bolts from the flanges (Nassau- and Bayern-class for example) and a more sophisticated one (Scharnhorst- and Bismarck-class for example). The building regulations for the simple design defined the shape and ma...

Yes, I think so.marcelo_malara wrote: ↑Fri Jul 07, 2023 6:00 pm Thanks! I am curious, I have never seen this before, was common in turbine ship to have decoupling shafts?

Next I am working on the Gefechtsbildempfänger, 35 in the plan. I am also looking at 36. The plan shows it like this: .... I have just made guesses that it would show target range, speed and bearing for the three fire control computers. But it's purely guesses based on what I can make out from the ...

Re: Identify indicator
It's the coupling indicator of the thrust blocks of the three shafts. I assume the lamps indicate "coupled", "coupling" and "decoupled". Hi Marc, Do you have any info how the coupling/decoupling was done? I hope this helps: Hauptkupplung SH .jpg The shaft is decoupled ...

Re: Identify indicator
The shafts would have been decoupled from their turbines in case of only one or two turbines and propellers were used. The other propeller(s) was/were decoupled to avoid damage to the stopped turbine(s).
Defect turbines or damaged shafts/propellers would have been decoupled from each other as well.

Re: Shipborne aircraft - Walrus and Arado AR196 - Lost Opportunities?
IIRC the pressure line on Bismarck was repaired, but the catapult was warped. I assume that they tried to use the starboard catapult, but the torpedo hit from Victorious in that area had damaged it. The port catapult was possibly unusable due to the list.

Rodney didn't change speed, your measurement is simply wrong. Rodney traveled approximately 5 nm between 9:02 and 9:17.

Re: How close was the final battle?
I measured about 2.5 nm between 9:02 and 9:09 ~ 21.5 knots for Rodney on the map.Mustang wrote: ↑Fri May 26, 2023 9:13 am

I’m sure you’ve seen drawings of how this was all rigged, but one question I’ve always had, and seen dodged a dozen times, is now the line was passed from the end of bugspire to the paravane. Was it rigged by divers as I suspect? That was a very complex procedure and I don't know if the following d...

Re: Bismarck RDF equipment
The two antenna "loops" are at right angles to each other. Each of them is connected to a coil. These two coils are at right angles to each other as well. One of these coins is slightly smaller and inside the other one. So they are building an axially symmetrical kind of "frame"....
