Re: Best cruisers of WWII and the best use of cruisers
On the otherhand it was always rather periphial to the topic of this thread and is becoming increasingly more so. Even if there are indeed exceptions to the general rule that curisers don't have TDS and battleships do it lends little wait to the argument that the Alaska's were battleships. TDSs are...

Re: Best cruisers of WWII and the best use of cruisers
Topedo bulges were fitted because in many cases it simply wasn't possible to refit a TDS into a battleship that wasn't designed with one. However you will note that the Ganguts had torpedo bulkheads fitted before the torpedo bulges and on more of the class. By itself a torpdo bulkhead doesn't reall...

Re: Best cruisers of WWII and the best use of cruisers
I'd like to see a source stating it wasn't a cruiser function. The fact that it may have been a battlecruiser function doesn't mean that it wasn't a cruiser one. Especially since the US never had any battlecruisers. You really do recquire somebody else to say it? Destroyers can act as cruiser-kille...

Re: Best cruisers of WWII and the best use of cruisers
Actually you've got things a bit backward. A torpedo bulkhead hardly constitutes a TDS while a torpedo bulge may be viewed as a rathe rudimentary one. Look at: http://www.navweaps.com/index_tech/tech-047.htm Huh? This makes no sense. Are ou sure you're not being just overly argumentative here? At t...

Re: Best cruisers of WWII and the best use of cruisers
What matters in the context of US cruisers is what the role of US cruisers as was spelt out in a previous post. Even within the USN, "cruiser functions" are quite different between an Atlanta and a New Orleans. The first USN treaty cruisers were diminished because they tried to developp a...

Re: Best cruisers of WWII and the best use of cruisers
While I also call the Alaskas battlecruisers, I do so despite the bulk of the evidence supports a cruiser designation. The only thing that really supports a battlecruiser designation is their size was so much bigger than previous cruisers. But ship classes grow. Yamato was ~5x the displacement of H...

Re: Best cruisers of WWII and the best use of cruisers
As for the initial scope of this thread, my 2 cents would go to Hipper class as "best" cruisers in terms of "who cuts who's throat in a balanced engagement". Main arguments: size, stability as gun platform, impossible accuracy (at Barents Sea it hit Achates at 18km in heavy seas...

Re: Best cruisers of WWII and the best use of cruisers
I had some good laughs with this thread. I don't know if there can be any clear-cut conclusion regarding heavy ship clasiffication. After all, Scharnhorst was designated "battleship" by the KGM, while many people, including myself, have an obsession about them being battlecruisers ... Cla...

Re: Best cruisers of WWII and the best use of cruisers
A "torpedo bulkhead" and "torpedo bulges" are two different thing. The latter are add-on bulges on the outside of the hull, while the former is genuine TDS (one may wonder how you define TDS if not with a torpedo bulkhead) incorporated into the hull's design. The Panzerschiff, Al...

Re: Best cruisers of WWII and the best use of cruisers
Here is, lwd, quite a knowledgeable and trustworthy site (that I strongly suggest you store in your favorites) that states the Panzerschiffen indeed had a (45mm) TDS. The Algerie also had a TDS I think, to put the last nail into that dead horse's coffin about TDS being BB/Cruiser stuff or not. And ...

Re: The Dutch Navy's Challenge
Thanks for that fine answer, Mr Saxton. The problem with these type of scenarios is that we benifit from hind sight that the original planners did not have. It's easy to say that some one should have built carriers or developed radar quicker and so forth, but that in many cases is not realistic cons...

Gee, guys, where would you be without rethorics? How about "its neighbours from the Baltc sea, not too far" huh, "professor"?

The Dutch Navy's Challenge
This is a project in the line of "How Would You Improve...' focusing on an eclectic little navy with one heck of a challenge - WWII's Dutch naval forces, the Koninklije Marine (KM). Netherlands' position in the Baltic is one of a small player, but this little nation with a great naval tradition...

Re: How would you improve the Kriegsmarine
Basically what you are offering is a more sensible, watered down version of the Z Plan. With all due respects, I think that, to the contrary, HMS26's plan is solidly anchored in reality, while most of the Z-plan was fantasy of the sort we see here, by guys like me! What needs to be clear is that th...
