Re: Cabins in a First Rate

The skylight would be handy for passing quick info to the skipper, especially if it was propped open.

I've no idea what the US forces would call it.

All the best

Re: Titanic tourist submersible goes missing with search under way

Retired USN here. Banging vigorously when you don't know if someone is actively listening would use up O2 quicker. Would NOT recommend.

Yeah, 67 years of studying wwii have given me no clues. Better late than never, so lay on McDuff.

Re: Chaser Gun on Paddle Steamer

I once saw a comment, source in the dust bin of the past (sorry), that said "you can always tell who keeps their powder dry"*, referring to some nasty sparks coming from a ship that appeared ready to light their own sails on fire during gunnery practice. Would have been "interesting&q...

By the time I found that one I was in the Straits of Magellan for the second time. Still a fun read with lots of forehead smacks. Uffff, rough waters! Did you cross the Strait or the Drake Passage? We went through, I'm not a navigator so I just enjoyed the view. There's one point where a mountain s...

Re: Uses of Capstan

For a small town boy in Indiana Hornblower was a bit of a challenge, but I plunged through all those nautical crises he managed. Nearly wore out two librarians chasing information not available in a library serving a town of ~7,000 Hoosier hicks. I think there was a companion volume, explaining som...

Thanks for all the answers, guys. See, that's the trouble with a model, you never really know if it's a true definition or not. The striking of forward rails makes sense to me, but blimey! They had to reposition standing rigging for it to fire? That must of been fun. How do you even change the posi...
