Re: should have the prinz eugen stayed with the bismarck ?
How true Paul. The orginal purpose of the question was to speculate over the decision processes that were faced by admiral and his command team. I wanted to read what others thought may or may not have been the options that were considered at the time. Secondary to that is what may have occured if t...

Re: should have the prinz eugen stayed with the bismarck ?
It is one of the by_products of making your ship similar in appearance and layout. Not only is it easier to transfer personal between ships as the crews would be use to the basic layout, the enemy have a problem Identifying which is which.

Re: should have the prinz eugen stayed with the bismarck ?
After reading the last post it clear that people think that it if the PG had stayed, the orginal 'lucky' hit would have still occurred and the two would have remained together until the end. To the former, no one could say ya or na to that. Personally I am of the belief that the 'odds' of successful...

Re: should have the prinz eugen stayed with the bismarck ?
Yes RPC would have taken care of most random movements while in a undamaged state. Once the damage started there was a clear effect on accuracy after the three sighting positions were taken out. 10 degrees is not that large amount really. Reading other posts it makes me realise that detailed informa...

Re: should have the prinz eugen stayed with the bismarck ?
I am enjoying the many varied opinions been expressed here. The paths of furrther reseach will be interesting whether the researcher agrees with the opinion or not. Investigating the what and how of a historical event is all ways a challenging experience. Eye witness accounts can vary so much you ha...

Re: should have the prinz eugen stayed with the bismarck ?
Some gunnery point maybe helpful in this debate. 1./ When you are on a moving gunnery platform the tightly held the course, the better the accuracy; excessive zig-zaging always affected that when it was directed, god knows what a random, uncontrolled zig-zag would do. 2./ I believe that a list can e...

Ok thanks. What other heavy units could intercept then? Most would have been heading other way wouldn't they?

Re: should have the prinz eugen stayed with the bismarck ?
Thanks for the on topic reply. As they were been shadowed a direct return with refuel may have not been possible. Most maps indicate a refueling tanker or supply vessel well to the north. Would have the British shadowers had the range to follow?

War time drydock construction in Germany
As part of my reseach into H class story. I was wondering if the other drydocks under construction as war was declared were all of similar size to Elbe 17 in Hamburg. How many what was there projected commissioning dates initially. I have I.D. 4 so far with minimal info on them other than some aeria...

Re: should have the prinz eugen stayed with the bismarck ?
A lively debate. It gone quite again so I decided to see if it could be enlivened it up again. Without going thru all the posts again. What would have been the fuel situation if the Germans had headed back to Northern Norway straight after the first battle? Assume no refueling at sea was possible.

Re: Bismarck and her contemporaries
Ok interesting conclusion that is supported by the evidence of the Bismark's last battle. More interestingly is the mention of variations in the plate metallurgy. It would be logical to assume that krupps legendary quality control started to slip as the war progressed specially with the increasing r...

Re: Bismarck and her contemporaries
Ah detail, detail nothing like something new to digest. Thank you Thorsten again. Your post about tripple turrets with the link was invaluable. An chance of English translation, my German is almost no-existant I afraid. Without a detailed read I would hazard a guess that the Bismark's array falls sh...
