Re: BS speed - last battle

My theory on my Bismarck did not refuel in Norway, is that Bismarck could not make her rated speed with a full fuel load. Lutjens avoided refueling Bismarck to reduce her displacement, and thus increase her speed and the probability of a successful breakout, and I suspect that he intended to fuel f...

Re: BS speed - last battle

Hi Ian. Bil Jurens is the last person I would ignore. He has the resources and the experience in dissecting events and references for what they are really worth. Bill and myself had a discussion on the Denmark site, about this very topic a few years ago and unless new information has come to light r...

Re: BS speed - last battle

Hi Dan. I could not answer you earlier, because I have moved house and it took a while to get braodband active at the new property. All the while I have been itching to get my teeth into this. I am not in aposition to publish it yet, but my comparison chart for Bismarck's and PG's fuel consumption s...

Re: BS speed - last battle

Bgile: I can only assume your statement that the Baron had no idea about tactics is all you can say since he directly contradicts your whole premise that the Bismarck had no fuel problems. In this case it's someone who was there, and he was in a much better position to know than you are now. :ok: :...

Re: BS speed - last battle

Hi Dan. Take a look at PG's War Diary and you will see that even when the ships were forcing the Strait with Suffolk and Norfolk, two hostile watchers in the picture, the squadron continued to advance at 27 knots - why not 30? They did go onto 30 for a very short while, but then reduced to 27. Lutje...

Re: BS speed - last battle

The Baron states "Ever since it had been determined that part of our fuel supply was inaccessible, more than twenty hours earlier, the Bismarck had had to proceed at an economical 20 knots. Had we been making the 28 knots of which her engines were capable, we would have been 160 nautical miles...

Re: BS speed - last battle

Hi Dan. The chart I have drawn shows Bismarck's curve of fuel consumption at all speeds. This is derived from many sources and having plotted the figures for certain speeds I have been able to draw a fair curve. It is certain that as with any ship there were "Flat spots" where speed and co...

Re: BS speed - last battle

Hi again Tommy. Yes I do recall our discussions on this topic and thanks for your input. I did not have the detail to hand when I made that last post. I don't think we can infer oil shortage from this signal. I have prepared a chart which shows just how much fuel Bismarck had consumed by comparison ...

Re: BS speed - last battle

It is clear that the hit in Bismarck's bow made the ship dig-in if she tried to steam at speed, so that will have conditoned thinking as to the best speed at which to proceed, but that to my mind is not the only consideration. If the squadron was to remain together, then they would have to keep thei...

Re: BS speed - last battle

The Bismarck is almost every month on Discovery Channel!!! It is Bismarck and Bismarck over again. If no other battleship was there in WWII. The allmighty Bismarck was sunk because the Germans failed to refuel her in Norway and Lütjens was so foolish to send nonsense to Berlin after the Bismarck di...

Re: BS speed - last battle

LWD Explain to me please where HEAT, HESH and Discarding Sabot were used in British Naval engagements circa-1941 Stawman. I never said or implied they were. I think it time you follow your own advice in regards to reading comprehension. So tank warfare hardly apllies to naval warfare then does it?

Re: BS speed - last battle

Once again LWD I dealt with spalling when comparing Hard and Tough armour. Tough won't usually spall and Hard armour may do. The strike on Dora's barbette dislodged a chunck of armour, but did not start a propellant fire. There has been confusion about Hood's destruction, regarding which ship caused...
