Re: The one about the Crane Hit
Hello Again Antonio, We seem to have drifted away from the two points I made: You responded on one as follows: o Coates did not report any turn to port by PoW as it was easy to realize, ... it was only your " deduction ". So the hit on the forward HACS directors could NOT have occurred the...

Re: The one about the Crane Hit
Hello Antonio, Glad to hear you are interested in Coate's account: I do not mean she was sunk, but was obscured by our superstructure. I did not see the explosion. So Hood is not obscured from Coates' viewpoint on the platform by superstructure, he is watching her "fairly closely" and then...

Re: The one about the Crane Hit
Hello Tommy, You have said good order detonation of a 38cm APC. In addition, analysis of the shell fragments and portions of the driving band indicated the shell was a 38cm. Antono has said the hit was a 380 mm ( 15 inches ) by Bismarck according to the PoW official damage documentation available. G...

Re: Bismarck second hit on PoW : HACS Director
Hello Alberto, As with Antonio, you can repeat as many times as you like that there was no turn to follow Hood, but I am more interested in what the witnesses say: From Esmond Knight, quoted by Antonio himself because practically immediately after that we altered course and the shell which came thro...

Re: Bismarck second hit on PoW : HACS Director
All, From the Official Report on the DCT hit quoted in Tarrant's KGV book "Splinters from this hit killed and wounded men in the exposed air defence station, situated below and just forward of the director support" From Geoffrey Brookes' Alarm Starboard, "Sub-Lieutenant Knight, RNVR w...

Re: Bismarck second hit on PoW : HACS Director
Hi Antonio Useful reference: Did you know if the after turrets "X" and "Y" fired at all during the action? No, as far as I know, no because we were closing at such a fine angle it would be impossible for the after turrets to bear at such a fine angle. So Esmond Knight says the A ...

The one about the Crane Hit
All, It is obvious that the detailed damage reports quoted by V Tarrant in his KGV Class battleships are not identical to other reports quoted on the site. Maybe the repairing dockyard wrote one, and some other agency the other. The description Tarrant quotes is as follows:- A 15" shell hit the...

Re: Bismarck second hit on PoW : HACS Director
All Antonio presents Esmond Knight's words as definite evidence of sequence, but all he actually says is there was a hit, and when he woke up, he was lying in some water. Water from shell splashes, water from the damaged tank? No-one knows. Which hit injured him? If he was in the ADO position he was...

Re: Bismarck heading west..
Hi All, Alecsandros has said IF the Schnarhorst or Gneisenau were ready... With 3-5 destroyers, they could have threatened Sommerville's force... And who knows... Luckily they weren't........... and so we don't have to all speak german and revere the Fuhrer's memory  I bet you secretly wish s...

Re: Bismarck heading west..
Hello All, The U boats available were fairly scattered, the weather was too bad for them to operate effectively on the surface and run enough speed to rendezvous, and co-operation was so difficult anyway, Bismarck had to hoist a black flag to identify herself so they didn't torpedo her  Aircr...

Re: Bismarck heading west..
Hi Alecsandros, Despite some misguided people imaging they know what what Bismarck's fuel consumption was, we know Lutjens sent messages saying he was short of fuel. Despite ludricrous suggestions made that Lutjens was trying to deliberately mislead his enemies, that is not the case. The bow was dow...

Re: Bismarck second hit on PoW : HACS Director
All, Alberto has said and the damage report diagram puts PoW on course 260 at the time the hit was received. I couldn't agree more. Which proves what the Baron, Busch, Brooks, Hunter-Terry and Coates (and some others) said all along. And disproves Rowell's maps and hence Antonio's timeline. ...

Re: Bismarck second hit on PoW : HACS Director
Hi All, The subject of the thread is the HA/DCT hit, and an attempt to determine when, and what sequence it and the other hits on PoW occurred. Simply accepting Antonio's contentious timeline with its "certainties" of what time individual photos were taken with no actual time stamping or c...

Re: Bismarck second hit on PoW : HACS Director
Hi All, The advance includes half the tactical diameter, so instead of 28 knots is 15.75 yds per second, so 885 yds travelled is 55 seconds assuming that extra speed does not reduce the advance distance or tactical diameter. PoW doesn't start turning away from Hood to starboard until after 06...

Re: Bismarck second hit on PoW : HACS Director
All,- A minor correction- PoW was shorter than Repulse, but her tactical diameter was stated much the same 930 yds (Conways Battleships). It is a reasonable assumption her advance would have been about the same. Does anybody have actual trials turning performance for the KGVs? 28 knots is 15.75 yds ...
